Energy-efficient systems, 100% green energy, no more plastic bags and becoming a strong landmark as a community hub. Summus Capital’s shopping centre Riga Plaza in Latvia has improved its sustainability rating under the internationally recognised BREEAM certification system, achieving a “Very Good” level. Previously certified at the “Good” level, the upgrade reflects significant progress in environmental performance, energy efficiency and responsible property management.
A BREEAM “Very Good” rating indicates that a building meets high standards across key sustainability criteria, including energy use, carbon emissions, resource efficiency, and the well-being of occupants. The upgraded certification confirms that Riga Plaza has implemented measurable improvements that reduce its environmental footprint while increasing operational efficiency and visitor experience.
“The upgraded BREEAM level of Riga Plaza demonstrates our long-term commitment to sustainability and responsible asset management,” said Meelis Šokman, Partner at Green Formula Capital and Head of Sustainability at Summus Capital. “We are consistently investing in improving the environmental performance of our properties, ensuring they remain resilient, efficient and aligned with our ESG objectives over the long term.”
New initiatives
The improved certification follows a range of sustainability and community-focused initiatives implemented at Riga Plaza. These include investments in energy-efficient systems and building management solutions, the use of 100% green electricity, electric vehicle charging stations, installation of photovoltaic panels, and enhanced recycling infrastructure. Plastic bags are replaced with reusable shopping bags, H&M and LAUTUS collect textiles for using them again etc. The centre has also strengthened its role as a community hub through initiatives such as charity campaigns, educational events, and inclusive visitor experiences.
Riga Plaza is one of the leading shopping centres in Riga, offering a wide mix of retail, dining and entertainment options. Located in a strategic area of the city, the centre serves as an important commercial and social destination for both local residents and visitors.
BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is one of the world’s leading sustainability assessment methods for buildings. It evaluates assets based on a wide range of criteria, including energy, water, materials, waste, health and well-being, and management practices, providing a comprehensive benchmark for environmental performance.
